Assessment First
Do I Need a Rewire?
Old wiring does not automatically mean your Bristol home needs a complete rewire. These are the signs that an installation should be professionally assessed – and what a proper assessment involves.

Eight Signs Your Wiring Should Be Assessed
Old or deteriorating wiring
Some older electrical installations may no longer be suitable for modern household demand.
Old fuse box or consumer unit
Older equipment can indicate that the electrical system has not been substantially upgraded for many years.
Frequently tripping electrics
Recurring faults should be properly investigated rather than continually reset.
Too few sockets
Heavy dependence on extension leads may indicate that the existing installation no longer suits modern use.
Damaged sockets or switches
Cracked, loose, discoloured, or damaged accessories should be professionally inspected.
Major renovation planned
Large renovations are often an ideal opportunity to assess and upgrade an ageing electrical system before decorating.
Previous DIY alterations
Multiple undocumented electrical alterations can make an installation harder to understand and maintain.
Electrical inspection recommendations
An inspection may identify areas where significant remedial work or rewiring should be considered.
What an Assessment Actually Tells You
A visual look at a fuse box gives a hint; a proper assessment gives an answer. When we assess a property we look at the type and condition of the cables, the earthing and bonding arrangements, the consumer unit, the accessories in each room, and any evidence of alterations made over the years. Where appropriate we carry out inspection and testing so that the recommendation is based on measured results rather than assumptions.
The outcome is usually one of three things: the installation is in serviceable condition and only minor remedial work is needed; specific circuits or areas should be rewired while the rest is retained; or the installation has reached the end of its useful life and a full rewire is the sensible course. We explain which applies to your home and why.
Rewire, Partial Rewire or Upgrade?
Many Bristol homes fall somewhere in the middle. A 1930s semi that had a kitchen extension in the 1990s may have perfectly good modern circuits in the kitchen and tired original wiring upstairs. In that case a partial rewire keeps the good work and replaces the rest. Elsewhere, a consumer unit upgrade may be all that is needed to bring an otherwise sound installation up to a modern standard of protection.
Timing matters too. If you are planning to decorate, replaster, fit a new kitchen or extend, it is far better to settle the electrical question first. Rewiring after a renovation means disturbing finished surfaces that were expensive to create.

Common Questions About Rewiring
How old does wiring have to be before it needs replacing?
There is no fixed age at which wiring must be replaced. Condition matters more than age, which is why an inspection and test is the reliable way to decide. Installations from before the 1970s, or with rubber or lead-sheathed cables, are more likely to need attention.
Is a fuse box with rewirable fuses dangerous?
Not automatically, but it usually means the installation lacks modern RCD protection and has not been substantially upgraded for a long time. An assessment will tell you whether a consumer unit upgrade alone is enough or whether the wiring behind it also needs work.
What is an EICR and do I need one first?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a formal inspection and test of your existing wiring. It grades any faults found and is a sensible first step if you are unsure whether a rewire is needed. Landlords in England are required to have one at least every five years.
Can you tell me over the phone whether I need a rewire?
We can give an initial view based on the age of the property, the type of fuse box and any symptoms you describe, but a firm recommendation needs a visit and testing.
